Public Health Engineering & Water Supply Department (PHE&WSD) was created in 1995 after trifurcation of RWD. Two Divisional offices along with man and infrastructures from PWD were also co-opted in the organization of PHE & WSD. The Department has a Commissioner/Secretary as an administrative head. There are four Chief Engineers. One handling the Design & Planning wing, one handling the Sanitaion (Swachh Bharat Mission) and two others handling the field responsibilities of respective zones i.e. Eastern Zone & Western Zone. There are 7 circles headed by Superintending Engineers. The total numbers of Divisions are 32 headed by an Executive Engineer with 30 Civil Divisions and 2 Mechanical Divisions. There are 68 Sub-Divisions headed by an Assistant Engineer and about 262 Sections manned by Junior Engineers. As per the allocation of business portfolio by the State Govt., PHE & WSD, following subjects are bestowed with the Department:
Rural Sanitation Programme Organising Workshops/Campaigns on use of safe drinking water including supply of disinfectants in rural areas Water Filtration & Treatment Urban Water Supply including laying and maintenance of distribution lines & storage tanks Community Ground water Resources of Water Supply Evaluation of participatory mechanism in maintaining rural water supply system Rural Water Supply (State & GoI sector) Planning & Execution of Sewerage system including treatment plants in Urban areas
